Mother: How was everything while I was out?

Daughter: Weeell. OK, I guess. Sort of.

Mother: What do you mean, 'OK, I guess. Sort of.' Did something happen?

Daughter: Mmmm. Well, I made some toast. And while it was cooking, I watched some TV.

Mother: Yes, go on.


Daughter: But while I was watching TV, a breeze came through the kitchen window. It must have blown the curtain over the toaster.

Mother: Yes, and then what happened?

Daughter: Well, the curtain sort of caught fire.


Mother: Oh no! And where was your father while this was happening?

Daughter: He was taking a nap, but I woke him up.

Mother: Did you call the fire brigade?


Daughter: Oh yes. But...

Mother: But what?

Daughter: Weeell. While the fire brigade was coming, Dad tried to put out the fire.

Mother: Yes, and what happened then?

Daughter: Weeell. He got a tea towel and tried to smother the flames.

Mother: And...


Daughter: The tea towel caught alight.

Mother: Oh no!

Daughter: So he threw it in the sink...but there was a frying pan in the sink.

Mother: Yes, and what did it have in it?


Daughter: Cooking oil.

Mother: It didn't catch alight too?

Daughter: Well yes, it did actually.


Mother: And then what happened?

Daughter: Weeell. The kitchen cupboards caught fire.

Mother: Oh my goodness!! It's a wonder the whole flat didn't burn down!


Daughter: Well. It looked like it might for a while. But then the fire brigade arrived, and they put out the fire. But I'm afraid the kitchen is a bit of a mess.

Mother: Oh my poor kitchen. I'm too frightened to look in there.

Daughter: Mmmm. Well, perhaps you should have a little lie down first. While you are resting, perhaps the smoke will clear a bit.
